Paul K. Maloney

Musician, Singer/Songwriter

About

As a teenager, Paul was inspired by the songs that permeated the radio airwaves in the 60’s. With microphone and tambourine in hand, he joined a band called the Undertakers and sang versions of songs recorded by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and various Motown Artists. After receiving a Kay acoustic guitar as a Christmas gift, Paul was committed to learn to play the music he loved.

In the early 70’s a Harmony acoustic replaced the Kay and years of self-study lay ahead. Paul worked as a bartender at the famous Drinking Gourd, in San Francisco, where he studied the styles of its talented performers - Jim Post, Jeffrey Comanor, Reilly & Maloney, Jay Kellum and Rik Elswit. In 1974 he was hired to work as a roadie for music promoter Bill Graham and learned the craft of concert production. A few years later Paul found work playing electric bass with bands in the Bay Area and Richmond, Virginia.

In the early 80’s, after moving to the Hudson Valley, he continued to work as a bass player with The Saturday Night Bluegrass Band, The Pontiacs, Big Joe Fitz, Dr. Romo’s Cajun Swing Orchestra, The Jim Barbaro Band and Cleoma’s Ghost. Living in Upstate New York for the past twenty-seven years has allowed Paul to learn from and work with some of the finest musicians on both coasts and continue to grow as a singer and performer.

Songwriting has become Paul’s passion and the next logical step in this creative process. This year marks the beginning of still another transition, from bass player to singer/songwriter. Today, his original songs fall into the genre of contemporary folk music. Paul’s current collaboration with producer and musician Dean Jones is entitled At Home and is scheduled for release February 2009.
