At Home

After twenty years of traveling this road
we still search for signs along the way
that remind us of the life we’ve come to know
and everything we miss when we’re away

In the shadow of the mountains we call home
that extend beyond these double yellow lines
there’s a simple cottage built on cobblestone
where the smell of wood smoke clings to towering pines

as we count the stars above the reservoir
we count the many the friends that we have known
and as a Catskill moon guides us through the night
we long for all we have to share at home… at home

When seasons change and measured snowflakes fall
birch trees bow to greet the morning light
and the sun begins to warm the frozen fields
before chasing birds of prey in endless flight

We’ve find comfort here, safe within these walls
where songs and laughter filter through each room
and a taste of supper is warming on the stove
as the heat kicks on in early afternoon

as we step outside to watch the clouds unfold
removed from traffic jams and telephones
we stare in awe at all this beauty to behold
to savor all we have to share at home

and when coyotes wail from their mountain trails
we remember how it feels to be alone
and as we close our eyes and tumble into sleep
we dream of all we have to share at home
we dream of all we have to share… at home
